I just bought a Bogen head ($311.99 USD,
http://www.cameraworld.com/adtemplate.asp?invky=59136). It is large
and heavy but fairly versatile. It just arrived yesterday in the
mail, so I have only shot one panorama with it so far. That one shot
came out quite well. It has a leveling plate, an adjustable click
stop ring, and an adjustable head which can support the camera in
either landscape or portrait. When I have some more experience, I
send out a complete review.
Kaidan (http://www.kaidan.com/products/pano-prods.html) has a series
which are lighter weight, but cost somewhat more to get the same
feature set. If you want to buy a bracket for a specific camera, or
don't care about leveling plate or the click stop ring, you can get
something that will come in under the $300.
If you want to go really cheap and light there is a suggestion here:

I have tried this technique with the Bogen L-bracket, but the steel
bracket makes the compass behave erratically. To make this work,
build your own bracket out of aluminum (no iron or steel parts).
